This technology consists of materials (mostly films and nonwovens) and absorbent articles made with aliphatic polyesters (e.g PLA), thermoplastic cellulose and other degradable polymers and methods of making them. The patented technology opens the door to an estimated $3.4B market in biodegradable plastics by 2020. Furthermore, this technology can create a more environmentally friendly alternative to packaging.
K-C developed biodegradable film and nonwoven technology to make components of personal care products biodegradable. But, this technology has applications in much broader fields.
- Commercialized in HUGGIES® Naturemade Diapers.
- Allows for production using standard machinery.
- Includes a binder fiber that is biodegradable while also providing improved wettability and binding properties that are easily prepared.
- Presents a new thermoplastic film that exhibits synergistic properties such as a flexible film produced by two stiffer constituents.
